Communication Satellite

A communication satellite system is an artificial satellite that acts as a large repeater in the sky. It receives signals from the source transmitter, amplifies using transponders, and relays them to the receiver. it creates a communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on Earth.

It’s uses for−

  • Internet
  • Military operations
  • Television
  • Telephone
  • Radio

Communication satellites are broadly categorized into three types depending upon the orbit in which they are placed;

  1. Geostationary Satellite (GEO)
  2. Medium Earth Orbit Satellite (MEO)
  3. Low Earth Orbit Satellite (LEO)

The Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system is one of the largest domestic communication satellite systems on the world.

The INSAT system with more than 200 transponders in the C- band. Extended C and Ku-bands provides services to telecommunications, television broadcasting, satellite news-gathering, weather forecasting, disaster warning and Search and Rescue operations.
